POISON TO POISON

FROM THE PUBLISHER

Updated July 28, 2008

I'm sure that you're wondering about our new magazine titles as much as you are wondering about the future of Famous Monsters of Filmland.  After 15 years of publishing FM, we wanted to expand our horizons and diversify.  But since we didn't want to change the basic content of FM, we decided to launch 2 additional magazines, each with a different approach.

SHOCK! THEATER CLASSICS will carry on the FM tradition with loads of rare fotos and film production information and reviews plus bonus pull-out posters!

FREAKY is a brand new magazine that will echo the Ghoulden days of horror and suspense story comics.  Each full size magazine features several complete illustrated stories plus vintage showcase pieces and short fantasy essays.  Unlike the comics that proliferated during the late 1970S, FREAKY will be patterned after classic-style horror & suspense comics.  No sleaze.  No scantily-clad psuedo vampiresses.  No gore.  Just great stories and illustrations for kids of all ages.

FM will be published in a continuing series of Fearbooks, specials and vintage reissues.  The King of them all lives on!

Connie and I are also working on a new internet TV show called...what else? SHOCK! THEATER CLASSICS.  We're very excited about the show because it will feature vintage shock TV classic films as well as live audience participation and a live horror host, just like the ghoulden days of shock TV.  We're sure this is going to be a lot of fun and we look forweird to having all of you join in and celebrate your favorite fiends with us.  We hope to have that up and running before the winter.

Finally, Connie and I are looking into the feasability of hosting another world convention for our fans.  We already have the style and features worked out and are looking at practical dates and locations.  Nothing has been decided yet but we can tell you that the third convention will almost certainly be held either in the mid-west or east coast.  We'll keep you informed.  We would both like very much to host another convention to have the opportunity to meet you all and say "fangs" for your years of support and fiendship.

JOIN US FOR A TANA LEAF TEA BREAK IN YOUR LOCAL AREA!

Later this year Connie and I will be visiting several cities in the mid-west and New York City/New Jersey area on business.  We're going to try and arrange a few convenient get-togethers with local fans.  Watch the Filmland Classics Google Board for information on when and where we'll be holding these meetings.  We hope to meet and spend some time with as many of you as possible!

RE-RELEASES OF OLD FAVORITES ON DVD!

Despite all we have had to endure, after 15 years I find myself actually re-invigorated about the classic monsters and the Ghoulden age of Horrorwood.  And, even though much of the content is exaggerated and "mythical", we plan to re-release the HOORAY FOR HORRORWOOD video from 1990.  We'll also be re-releasing our AMAZING WORLDS OF SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY (1991), AND THE 1993 35TH ANNIVERSARY FAMOUS MONSTERS WORLD CONVENTION including exclusive never-before-seen footage from the 1995 Son of Famous Monsters Convention.  All 3 titles will be released on DVD with new, unseen bonus footage and features.  The kongtroversial story of the rebirth of Famous Monsters magazine LIFE IS BUT A SCREAM! will also be re-released in an updated second edition later this year, followed by a sequel which will cover the years from 2000 to the present in 2009.

SO, WHAT'S UP WITH ALL THE INTERNET POSTS ABOUT FM LEGAL ISSUES?

Many of you are aware that we are still fighting the same corrupt entities that we have been fighting now for over a decade.  You' may have read comments from another source claiming that they now own the FM trademark.  All I can tell you is that you shouldn't put any stock in what they say.  Each time we've had to deal with this sort of thing it takes several weeks before we can get things under control.  There is a lot more going on behind the screams than they (or we, for that matter) are telling you and we need to keep certain things under wraps until the time is right to act.  So pay them no mind.  It will all be handled in the end.  Other attempts to steal the trademark have been unsuccessful and we are confident that in due course we will prevail on all fronts.  These self-serving parties will be dealt with in a legal manner and we can move on unbothered.  it's been a long hard road.  Some people have been predicting my publishing demise almost weekly for over 10 years but, to quote Elton John, "I'm still standin'" so that should tell you something about the merits of their arguments.

THE BEAST IS YET TO COME!

So, fiends, here we are many decades down the road. Like our beloved monsters, we're battered and bruised, tattered and tread upon, but still we endure. We look forward to those fleeting moments when we can drift back and revel in the simpler times of youth. We find comfort and joy in realizing that there are youngsters out there who embrace the same passions for the Ghoulden Age that we love and feel refreshed in sharing our knowledge and memories with them. It is often said of growing up that you can never go home again. From my perspective, it appears that, in fact, you never really leave.

We've got lots more in store for you.  As the famous Admiral of the Transylvanian Fleet, John Paul Bones, once said: "We have not yet begun to fright!" We hope you'll stay with us as we keep the torch burning and continue to celebrate that "new world of gods and monsters" that so enthralls us.

Sinc-eerie-ly,

WHAT'S IN STORE FOR THE NEXT YEAR?

I want to assure you I do not plan to retire Famous Monsters of Filmland.  FM #248, FM #249 and FM #250  will be published as scheduled. SHOCK! #1 will debut in October, 2008.  FREAKY #1 will debut in September.

We had originally intended to introduce SHOCK! by merging it with FM #248.  However many fans wrote in and asked that we release an official SHOCK! Issue #1 to start the new series so that is what we're doing.  FM #248, 249 and 250 will be published as stand-alone issues and SHOCK #1 will debut by itself in October.  If you already pre-ordered the Shock/FM248 combo from our web site, you will be getting FM #248.  You can pre-order SHOCK! #1 separately from our web store.

Subscriptions to all 3 titles will be available at the end of August.  Subscriptions to SHOCK and FREAKY will start with issue #1 of each.  SHOCK #1 and FREAKY #1 are also sold as single copies.
